Rigging Report

RE: Surflite Sky Surf binding system This problem was brought to the attention of The Freefall Factory after an incident with a jumper who attempted to cutaway from a spinning board. The cutaway did not occur and the jumper was forced to kick out of their shoe to cutaway from the board. Had this not be attainable we believe a serious injury or fatality may have occurred. You will see from the photos that once the cutaway occurs there seems insufficient room for the small ring to release from the bindings. The foot holds the cutaway system tight to the large ring and the thread thru webbing does not allow movement of the small ring to give more clearance..

When the user first obtained the bindings the thread thru webbing was flat, giving even less room for the small ring to move. After a similar incident the user had the webbing tapered to alleviate the pressure on a cutaway. You will see in the video although we obtained varying levels of pressure for full cut away there is a definite problem with the small ring sticking after the cutaway cable has been released. Also note that we have simulated the pull force with both the tapered webbing and with the flat webbing I believe the problem would be alleviated by putting the entire cutaway system on the outside of the binding, thus ensuring that no pressure is applied to the webbing, the cutaway cable or the small ring. In addition to this the thread thru hardware used is not MS hardware and though this is not a problem the hardware is burred with sharp edges direct to the webbing.

NB: Refer to photos for visual aid. In addition we have supplied a video tape of the pull tests which highlight the problem.

Sincerely, etc

Blue Skies

Kurt
